Advice given

Advice on how to get the best out of your appliance. There are many factors that affect how well your appliance will work and what works well for one install may not work so well on another. I'm always happy to offer hints and tips or simply help people who are new to log burners who say "how do I light a fire".

Does my chimney need sweeping?

Yes, all open fires and stoves require regular cleaning to ensure they are operating efficiently and cleanly.
Whether it's a primary source of heat or supplemental, regular cleaning and inspections will ensure that your appliance is working to it's best and is also in a safe condition.

Every chimney sweep I carry out  includes a basic visual inspection of the fire / stove to ensure it has been installed correctly, meets regulations and is also in good working order. Stove operation, air controls and seals are checked and any required maintenance can be discussed with advice given on the day.

Problem diagnosis

In this example a customer had tried to replace the door rope themselves. They had bought some new rope online but they were unaware that rope comes in a wide variety of sizes as well as hard and soft variants. The customer told me that since changing the rope they were unable to reduce the size of the fire even with the air controls fully closed.
This photo shows the rope bought by the customer on the right alongside the correct size rope on the left. Once the correct sized rope was fitted, this then provided an air tight seal on the door and the customer can now control the size of the fire as expected.

Servicing items stock

I carry a range of basic servicing items in stock on the van with door rope from 3-14mm so I will probably have the size you require.
I also carry vermiculite board so I can cut standard flat firebricks to size
(please note that this is dependant upon your stove model)

Regulations & standards

Visual checks carried out prior to sweeping to confirm that your appliance has been correctly installed. Believe it or not I have actually found log burners fitted directly onto wooden floors and solid fuel stoves fitted to aluminium gas liners! Carbon monoxide alarms hidden behind TV and ornaments etc. If I find any issues I can advise to ensure your appliance is safe to use

Recently moved into a house with a log burner?

Has it been correctly installed? has it been recently swept?
If you are unsure I can provide a new homeowners inspection to carry out a visual check of the installation, sweep then CCTV inspection of the liner and advise.

All stove installations after 2005 should have been carried out by a competent person, signed off and notified to building control (this is normally carried out by the installer with Hetas registration)

Don't have a Hetas / Oftec / Building Control certificate for installation? then I'd recommend getting it checked as your home insurance may be invalid without it

Get the most out of your fire.
Burn cleaner and more efficiently
